Hubert goes out for a hunt & caring for your Red Wing boots:
Took the Red Wing 877 out for a grouse hunt the other day, my feet were comfortable and dry the entire day. Did't see many birds but it was a gorgeous day and the dog always has a excellent time.
After the hunt my boots were quite dirty, and worst of all about to get dry. Most people don't realize how dry it gets in winter, hell on leather.
A good cleaning and polishing will extend the life of the boot, and you won't look like a hill billy around the town. First off give the boot a good cleaning with a hot rag or just a light amount of dish soap. I recommend using oil or polish with mink oil, it keeps the leather from getting dry and cracked. If you plan on some serious off the path trekking use something with a silicone base, it will make the boot pretty much water proof.
Red Wing sells leather care products, I happen to like the mink oil and the all natural boot oil. The boot oil is as advertised "all natural" made from mink oil and pine pitch, no silicone or petroleum in this product. Great for a quick shine or to repair scratches and gouges in the leather, keep in mind the boot oil will darken the leather due to the pine pitch. The Mink oil is made with silicone making this polish a great way to water proof your boots. The mink oil will darken your boots a small amount but will lighten with in a few weeks back to the leathers original color.
