Let me start off saying this, I beat the living s#!t out of my Red Wing boots. Not in a act of careless boot vandalism but because I think they should be put to the test every time I wear them, this is after all what they were created for. I treat my Santonis and Aldens as they should be cared for, give them a good shine on a regular basis and keep them nestled in cedar shoe trees between use. My Red Wings however experience a different side of life, endless miles on my motorcycle and bike, trudging salt and snow on my way through Minnesota's winter, and even out in the woods for a grouse hunt. This however doesn't mean I don't care for my boots, I just like to see them get pretty beat up before I shine them. I love the all the wear markings on the leather, every scratch and discoloration tells a story. Take the third picture, my motorcycle shifter will leave a permanent scar on my left boot, a badge of honor that can't be reproduced.
Here's the skinny on how I care for my Red Wings.
- Clean with mild soap and water, wipe dry.
- Slather with Red Wing's boot conditioner, softens leather and adds a layer of moisture to any scratch, gouge ect.
- Let soak in for about 6 hours, wipe or brush dry.
- Rub in Red Wing's All Natural Boot Oil, this adds among other things a layer of pine pitch acting like natures silicone. This protects the leather from moisture and abrasions. Let sit for an hour and wipe dry.
