Meet The Designer / Grown&Sewn Founder Rob Magness
Grown&Sewn KAX are a game-changer; comfy, broken-in-feeling khakis with the durability and fit of premium denim. They make a handful of classic styles in three smart cuts: easy, straight, and a slim taper. The company started a few years back when Rob Magness, former senior design director at Ralph Lauren, felt led to "create his own unique brand rooted in American culture and history" after witnessing the "parallel between American designs and American produced clothing depreciate." I emailed Rob the other day, and he kindly answered a few questions about the line for the exclusive mini-interview below:

"Grown & Sewn" is an apt name for the pants you're making; not only are they manufactured and washed here in America, (in San Francisco and Brooklyn, respectively) but all the materials that go into them, from the cotton to the copper hardware, are sourced domestically. In an industry where so many companies rely on globally sourced labor and materials, it's obvious that "Made in the USA" is important to you. What are some of the reasons for this?
The founding concept behind Grown&Sewn was to build a pant that takes the influence of the perfect khaki and the fit, attitude, and guts of a great jean. We call these pants, KAX, Khakis with a denim DNA. Since we were inspired by two American iconic garments, it felt very appropriate to build the concept right here in our backyard. Constructing product in the United States allows us to closely monitor the process, contributing to consistent quality and well crafted garments. We also believe contributing to the living wages and limiting our environmental impact is part of being globally responsible.
Now, Grown&Sewn is a relatively new company, yet you're producing these really classic, authentically-made garments with a distinctly American heritage. What sort of design experience did you have prior to starting Grown&Sewn?
I spent a decade in Men's Design at Ralph Lauren. I was able to work on an incredible range of product and was surrounded by very talented individuals that contributed to an inspiring atmosphere. I was also given the opportunity to travel the world to seek out inspiration through shopping vintage markets, stores, and soaking in the different cultures. The best pieces were always the garments that were authentic, well-crafted, and made with integrity, all attributes we put into our products.
What's your favorite drink, Rob?
I have a new 12 week old baby girl, anything with caffeine.

In addition to the TriBeCa flagship store, Grown&Sewn KAX are only available at a handful of stores in America, Japan, and South Korea. Hubert White is proud to be the only Grown&Sewn stockist in Minneapolis.
